As my childhood passes,
As my innocence shies,
As my naive attitude fades,
I can see through your lies;
You said a tooth fairy took my tooth,
Well guess what? I stayed up all night to spy,
You made her up; it was you,
You guys told yet another lie;
You said that Santa Claus left all those presents,
Under the Christmas tree,
I cannot believe that you tried
To hide the real truth from me;
You told me that if I ate a seed,
A watermelon tree would grow.
Well you know what I found?
Watermelons grow in bushes you know.
You told me out of all the little girls
I was the best, you said it was true,
But recently I heard Mrs Queenie
Saying the exact thing to Wilmy Sue.
You told me I could do whatever I want
And wouldn’t fail,
I tried to reach for the stars
But to no avail.
You told me a couple of lies,
A bunch of stories and a half truth
And I naively believed you
In my innocent, unperceived youth…
That is powerful.

Great piece! What do we miss in childhood? Is it the innocence? The false perception that is carefully curated by our parents to shield us from the dark place the world often is? Do we miss believing them? Wonderful questions that flow from this piece. Thank you for writing it.

You summarised it all so perfectly! This is really awe-inspiring especially since I am 3 days away from stepping into adulthood! Thank you soo much for reading it and dropping this wonderful comment😊

Great poem. There is such magic in some of these tales of childhood, but a line where it feels like deception on the part of adults. I wish innocence and magic could last longer!

How I wish that too😔! Unfortunately, we are always urged to grow up and lose out on that naivety!

The Santa Clause/Tooth Fairy thing never bothered me. I understood at the time why they did it. No different than any other story made up to make life a little bit more fun.

This is so beautifully written, Ashwini. Love the structure of your poem, the rhymes and the main theme: the loss of innocence. From illusion to delusion. You wanted to know what happens with Frank and Nicole’s story I based my last poem on. Well, Nicole seems to represent innocence being much younger than Frank, and thus he stands for experience. This is what happens next: https://savioni.wordpress.com/2019/02/27/pickles-and-tarts-chapter-8/

Thank you, Ashwini. BTW, it is Marta. My friend Mario Savioni is a much better writer than me. He really deserves it. His novel “Pickles and Tarts” is a story where 54-year-old Frank has been selected by 19-year-old Nicole through a dating site. Frank looks at Nicole’s pics on the site and is attracted to her beauty. Nicole tells him she has a boyfriend and is not interested in a romantic relationship. She adds: “It’s fun to talk to different people sometimes.” It is a lovely story of illusion-delusion, dream-reality, non-conformist with the Capitalist system, highly reflective on love, sex and human relationships in today’s world. Highly intriguing and recommendable to you and to all of your followers: https://savioni.wordpress.com/2019/03/08/pickles-and-tarts-chapter-9/
